According to experts, Cold Fusion Gelato in Newport makes the best Italian ice cream in the state. The store received top honors and is the only Rhode Island gelato shop to be listed in East Coast Scoops, a guide recently published. Gray's Ice Cream in Tiverton and Maxmillian's Ice Cream Cafe in Providence made the book's Rhode Island list in the regular ice cream category. The difference? Gelato is a handmade Italian-style ice cream prized for its creamy texture, specialty flavors, and lower fat content.
Cold Fusion is located on the Brown and Howard Wharf off Thames Street,
and their gelato is also available on the dessert menu of some local restaurants.
The East Coast Scoops listing is sweet validation for owner Torrance Kopfer,
who gave up a Wall Street investment banker's life last year to open his
shop. Open seven days a week, Cold Fusion also serves espresso drinks, authentic
granites, and other Italian treats.
